The University, named after Sree Sankaracharya, the illustrious sage, Philosopher and the exponent of advaita, has its Head Quarters at Kalady, his birth place, on the banks of the river Periyar in Kerala. The objectives of the University, as unambiguously stated in the Act S of 1994 of the Kerala Legislature, are to impart knowledge in various branches of Sanskrit as well as in Indology, Indian Culture, Indian Languages, Indian Philosophy, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages and Social Sciences and to promote the study and research of Sanskrit through equanimous promotion of other languages in India and abroad that have copiously contributed to the study of Sanskrit. The collection and preservation of manuscripts and publication of books in Sanskrit and other languages to develop and synergise Indian systems of knowledge are also among the other objectives. The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit has accredited by the NAAC, a specially designated agency of UGC, with ‘A’ Grade in 2014 to become the first university in Kerala having such a top accreditation. The University had already got 2(f) and 12(B) recognitions of the University Grants Commission on 1st March 1994 and 27th April, 200S respectively.
It is a multi-campus University with state wide jurisdiction to conduct academic programmes with Main Campus at Kalady and eight Regional Campuses at Thiruvananthapuram, Panmana, Thuravoor, Ettumanoor, Thrissur, Tirur, Koyilandy and Payyannur. His Excellency the Governor of the State of Kerala is the Chancellor of the University. The Hon’ble Minister for Education is the Pro-Chancellor. The Syndicate of which the Vice¬Chancellor is the Chairman exercise the Executive control of the University.
There are Ten Faculties in the University: (i) Sanskrit Literature (ii) Sanskrit Grammar (iii) Indian Metaphysics (iv) Indian Logic (v) Other Sanskrit Studies (vi) Indology (vii) Indian Languages (viii) Foreign Languages (ix) Arts and Social Sciences (x) Science, Technology and Education.
The University offers academic programmes in various subjects/ disciplines organized through the following 23 departments:

Arabic in addition to the above there are five Centres of Inter- disciplinary Research: Manuscriptology, Comparative Literature, Translation Studies, Vedic Studies and Gender Studies.
The University offers under-graduate programmes in 8 disciplines:, Sanskrit Sahitya, Sanskrit Nyaya, Sanskrit Vyakarana, Sanskrit Vedanta, Sanskrit General, Music, Dance and Painting and post graduate programmes in following subjects: Sanskrit Sahitya, Sanskrit Vedanta, Sanskrit Vyakarana, Sanskrit Nyaya, Sanskrit General, Hindi, History, Malayalam, Philosophy, Urdu, Music, Theatre, English, Comparative Literature, Bharathanattyam, Mohiniyattom, Vedic Studies, Arabic, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Social Work (MSW), Physical Education (M.PEd) and Painting (MFA).
The University also offers M.Phil/Ph.D. programmes in Sanskrit Sahitya, Sanskrit Vyakarana, Sanskrit Vedanta, Sanskrit Nyaya, Sanskrit General, Hindi, History, Malayalam, English, Vastuvidya, Manuscriptology, Translation Studies, Urdu, Music, Philosophy, Sociology, Geography,Comparative Literature, Psychology, Gender Studies and Direct Ph.D programmes in 6 disciplines - Theatre, Social Work, Vedic Studies, Dance, Physical Education and Ayurveda. Besides there is a part time P. G. Diploma course in Translation and Office Proceedings in Hindi and Diploma program in Ayurveda Panchakarma and International Spa Theraphy.
Semester-Course and Credit System
Under Graduate programmes are offered under Choice Based Credit Semester System (CBCSS) and all Post Graduate and Integrated M.Phil- Ph.D programmes are under the Credit and Semester System with ample space for interdisciplinary choice of courses. The credit based curriculum provides modular programmes that offer students flexibility and discretion in the selection of the topics of study.
