The Scholarship & special Grant for Music, Fine Arts and Performing Arts and Theatre Arts, instituted by the Govt. of Kerala and to be implemented by Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (S.S.U.S), Kalady, as the nodal agency, is aimed at encouraging and nurturing talents in the above areas, at high school, higher secondary and degree levels .Eligible candidates will be given the opportunity to pursue higher studies and to interact with the eminent personalities in the respective fields within India.


  1. Encouragement of young artists to cultivate their creative talents seriously
  2. Motivation of young artists to take up artistic pursuits as viable vocations and career avenues
  3. Providing of financial support to young artists for advanced training in their respective fields
  4. Institution of a system of mentoring whereby young artists receive close, individual attention and tuition from eminent artists/teachers
  5. Providing of specialized training in various aspects of different art forms to worthy young artists
  6. Providing of opportunities to young artists to visit major universities and institutions dedicated to various art forms
  7. Providing of opportunities to young artists to participate and showcase their talent in major art events/festivals
  8. Providing of support to young artists to attend international festivals/events in collaboration with international organizations such as the UNESCO


Students with at least three years training/experience in the fields of Music, Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Theatre Arts who are

A. studying in standards 9, 10, 11, or 12 in Government/ Aided Schools

B. undergraduate students in Government/ Aided Colleges, government funded universities/deemed universities.

Students who are already receiving scholarship, National, State or other in the specific areas are not eligible. Students who received Nurture Scholarship last year are not eligible for applying this year.

Application Process

Candidates for the programme should submit an application in the prescribed format (available from SSUS), before 29 February, with a portfolio that includes the following:

  1. The training that they have undergone
  2. The achievements gained in their field, such as prizes, recognitions, etc.
  3. A brief description of the training/higher study that they hope to undertake
  4. The objectives/aims of the training/higher study
  5. Letters of recommendation from teachers/experts in the field
  6. Samples of work, wherever applicable

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by an expert committee who will assess the candidate’s prowess/merit through demonstration/performance/samples of work, etc.

Expert Committee & Selection Process

The expert committee shall be chaired by an eminent art practitioner/academic/critic and shall comprise of two experts (practitioners/critics/academics) each from the fields of fine arts, music, theatre arts and performing arts. The selection of the awardees will be according to the following modality:

Applications in each of the areas will be scrutinized by the experts in the respective fields and the best candidates in each area (preferably twice the number of scholarships in each area) will be shortlisted and reported to the full committee, who after discussion shall decide upon the final selections. If there is a lack in adequately talented/qualified/deserving candidates in any field or category, the committee shall have the authority to assign those scholarships to another field/category if there are deserving candidates in it. The committee shall have the authority to award less than the prescribed number of total scholarships, if they are of the opinion that there are not enough deserving candidates.

In the eventuality of there being surplus funds after all the scholarships and special grants are allotted, the said amount shall be carried over to the next year and the number of scholarships/special grants increased correspondingly.

Value of Scholarship

Each Scholarship shall of value Rs.750 per month in addition to a contingency grant 2500 per year to meet the expenses with regards to study aids and other expenses to each student, to a total number of 200 students. It shall be given for a full academic year irrespective of date of application/decision date scholarship.

Special grant

Students who have been selected for the scholarships may, subsequent to the selection, apply for special grants for (1) travel for participation in festivals/conferences/workshops of a national/international nature (2) specialized training in a university/institution offering advanced training in art forms, (3) specialized, one-on-one training with an eminent artist/practitioner (mentor). (4). Performance/Exhibition to be conducted on the successful completion of the No. (2) or No.(3), mentioned above. Expenses related to the performances/exhibitions may be met with the approval of the selection committee. Applications have to be submitted in the prescribed format and should include the following:

  1. The objectives/aims of the training/higher study/travel
  2. The institution/artist/event with whom/where they plan to undertake it
  3. A letter of acceptance from the institution/artist/event organizers

The selection committee shall decide upon the quantum and number of such special grants, taking into account the funds available and the requirements of the applicants. In exceptional circumstances, applications for such special grants from applicants who are outside the initial selected group of students will be considered, if the selection committee deems it a valid and valuable Endeavour. Special grant will be awarded only once to a candidate.

Progress of Work

Students who have been awarded scholarships should submit a report of progress/work done every three months and a final report detailing all the work done at the end of the scholarship period. Such reports should reach the nodal agency within 15 days of the completion of each three month period. Continuation of scholarship is subject to the assessment done every three months, on the basis of the reports. Failure to submit the reports shall result in immediate stoppage of the scholarship. The contingency grant shall be released only after the satisfactory completion of the scholarship scheme and the submission of the final report.

Monitoring the scheme

Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit shall maintain a website (or sub page in the University website) with details of grantees and their progress reports. Application form shall be available in the same page.

The University was established two decades ago in the name of the illustrious Indian philosopher Jagad Guru Adi Sankara in his place of birth at Kalady.
