Regional Campus - Payyannur

Payyannur is named as one among the first Brahmin settlement villages of Kerala . It was a temple village earlier, as the famous Subrahmanya temple related to the name of Parasurama is situated here. As pre scholars, the temple has been beautifully narrated in the oldest Purana book, Brahmandapurana and the oldest Sanskrit text, Mushikavamsa of Atula, was written in this land. This place is very famous as it is the birth place of many Sanskrit Scholars, like Potera Ezuttacchan, Anitil Ezuttacchan , Karippath Ezuttacchan, Trippanikkara poduval , Sankaranathanunittiri etc. The oldest poem of Malayalam, namely Payyanur Pattu is also related to this land. The Regional Campus of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit started functioning on 18th June 1995 and Dr.E.Sreedharan, lecturer, Sanskrit Sahitya was posted as Campus - in - Charge. At the beginning, the Campus provided eight P.G. Courses (Sanskrit Sahitya, Vyakarana, Vedanta, Malayalam, Hindi, History, Social Work and Jyothisha) and two U.G. Courses of tri-pauce pattern (Sanskrit- Philosophy- History, Sanskri-Econocics- Politics). Formal inauguration of the Campus was done by Sri.R.Ramachandran Nair, IAS, the Vice-Chancellor of the University and Chief Secretary of the State. Initially, the Campus had been housed in a rented building at the center of Payyanur town.

Since then it has been catering to the educational needs of both the rural and urban areas of thispart of the state. Thus the long cherished dreams and desires of the  people of Payyanur came true. At the very beginning itself the Campus has been providing a professional course in Social Work (MSW), and at that time it was the only institution in North Malabar which provided this prestigious course.

Location of the campus and area:

Payyanur is a Municipal Town situated at the northern end of Kannur district in North Malabar region of Kerala, India. Other villages are; Annur and Kokkanissery. The town is situated on the banks of Perumba River. Payyanur is located at 12.1°N 75.2°E. The distance from Kalady. The main Campus to Payyanur is 6.30hrs (300kms).

About Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit
