Regional Campus - Thiruvananthapuram

The inception of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady in 1993, was rather a belated translation into reality of a unique idea conceived by a committee in the early 1970s, headed by the late K.P. Achyuta Menon, a former Civil Servant and a Sanskrit Scholar in his own right. The University with its headquarters at Kalady, the birth place of Adi Sankara had a geographical spread throughout Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, the Capital city of God’s own country. The city has occupied a pride of place for more than a century in the educational history of Kerala and it is only appropriate that it housed one of the early Regional Campuss of the University. The centre had a modest beginning in an approximately 2000 sq.ft rented building aptly named ‘Nalanda’ with the late Dr. Poovattoor Ramakrishna Pillai, an eminent Sanskrit Scholar, as it’s Director. The academic activities were set in motion with the department of Malayalam in full swing and others following at close heels. By 1994, the Centre could boast of eight fully functioning departments with facilities for Post graduate and research pursuits and about eleven under Graduate options.
