The Department of Ayurveda was established in 1995 under the guidance of Padmasree Dr. K. Rajagopalan, who advocated innovative academic programmes instead of the conventional programmes in Ayurveda. He formulated the academic approach more on an applied perspective than a conceptual implementation.

With thrust on research and innovation, the department has been offering research programmes, programmes highlighting skill training and industry linkage, applied integrated programmes, and employment-specific programmes leading to the award of Ph.D., Post Graduate Diploma and Diploma.

The Department, headquartered at Kalady, has been offering Direct Ph.D. programmes in Ayurveda since 1995. In 2016, the Department extended its academic activities to the Regional Campus, Ettumanoor, focusing more on innovative academic programmes.
