Department of Theatre

About the Department

The Department of Theatre was established in 1995 and belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The Department has a vibrant and talented faculty team with traditional and modern knowledge on the theoretical and practical systems of theatre arts.

Every year the Department admits 12 gifted artists as postgraduate students based on the entrance and aptitude test, and they are the greatest resource of the Department in its growth process. The Department has developed decent infrastructural facilities for the smooth functioning of the Department.

The students and teachers together work for inter-departmental and interdisciplinary collaborations in making the theatre arts contemporary and productive. The students and teachers make their own creative works and productions every year, which in turn become great works of art.

This is the only department in the entire nation that engages the artists of Koodiyattom, which is the traditional Sanskrit Drama, as faculty. These faculty members have active representation and presentation in national and international art and theatre workshops and seminars.

This results in:

  • The give-and-take relationship between World and Malayalam theatre fields.
  • Knowledge and system sharing between traditional and contemporary theatre.
  • Ability to contribute more than any other similar departments to the fields of tradition, modernity and intercultural functions.

The Department is in an exploration of the many ways theatre and classical theatre interpret and affect society. Students and faculty collaborate on creative research projects designed to raise awareness, create community, foster self-expression, challenge stereotypes, evoke compassion, and represent diverse perspectives.

Advanced academic programmes and capstone experiences enable students to develop and articulate their own unique aesthetics, purpose and creative vision for life and art beyond academics.

This M.Phil.-Ph.D. integrated programme aims to give students a rigorous anchoring to the discipline of Theatre, and the students are expected to contemplate their research projects in relation to contemporary debates in theatre and performance studies.
