Sanskrit Nyaya

Nyaya literally means "rules", "method" or "judgment". It is also the name of one of the six orthodox (astika) schools of Hinduism. This school's most significant contributions to Indian philosophy was systematic development of the theory of logic, methodology, and its treatises on epistemology. Nyaya school's epistemology accepts four out of six Pramanas as reliable means of gaining knowledge – Pratyakṣa (perception), Anumāṇa (inference), Upamāṇa (comparison and analogy) and Śabda (word, testimony of past or present reliable experts). In its metaphysics, Nyaya school is closer to Vaisheshika school of Hinduism than others. It holds that human suffering results from mistakes/defects produced by activity under wrong knowledge (notions and ignorance).Moksha (liberation), it states, is gained through right knowledge. This premise led Nyaya to concern itself with epistemology, that is the reliable means to gain correct knowledge and to remove wrong notions. False knowledge is not merely ignorance to Naiyyayikas, it includes delusion. Correct knowledge is discovering and overcoming one's delusions, and understanding true nature of soul, self and reality. Naiyyayika scholars approached philosophy as a form of direct realism, stating that anything that really exists is in principle humanly knowable. To them, correct knowledge and understanding is different than simple, reflexive cognition; it requires Anuvyavasaya (cross-examination of cognition, reflective cognition of what one thinks one knows).influential collection of texts on logic and reason is the Nyayasutras, attributed to Aksapada Gautama, variously estimated to have been composed by 6th-century BCE.

The department of Sanskrit Nyaya is established in 1993 and belongs to the Faculty of Indian Logic. Faculty members are good academic qualities, members are interested in Research, Significant contribution made in the field of Nyaya by the faculty and students through publications. Department of Sanskrit Nyaya conducted seminar, workshops and extension lecturers try to establish and expand the growing relevance of studies of Sanskrit sastras in various new areas. Sanskrit Vedanta

Vedanta literally means "end of the Vedas", reflecting ideas that emerged from the speculations and philosophies contained in the Upanishads. It does not stand for one comprehensive or unifying doctrine. Rather it is an umbrella term for many sub-traditions, ranging from dualism to non-dualism, all of which developed on the basis of a common textual connection called the Prasthanatrayi. The Prasthanatrayi is a collective term for the Principal Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita.

All Vedanta schools, in their deliberations, concern themselves with the following three categories but differ in their views regarding the concept and the relations between them: Brahmanthe ultimate metaphysical reality, Ātman / Jivātmanthe individual soul or self, and Prakritithe empirical world, ever-changing physical universe, body and matter.

Some of the better known sub-traditions of Vedanta include Advaita (non-dualism), Vishishtadvaita (qualified non-dualism), and Dvaita (dualism). Most other Vedantic sub-traditions are subsumed under the term Bhedabheda (difference and non-difference). Over time, Vedanta adopted ideas from other orthodox (āstika) schools like Yoga and Nyaya, and, through this syncretism, became the most prominent school of Hinduism. Many extant forms of Vaishnavism, Shaivism and Shaktism have been significantly shaped and influenced by the doctrines of different schools of Vedanta. The Vedanta school has had a historic and central influence on Hinduism.

The department of Sanskrit Vedanta is established in 1993 and belongs to the Faculty of Indian Metaphysics. The philosophy of Advaita Vedanta presented systematically by the great Acharya Sankara, is the most valuable contribution of India to the world of intelligentsia. The relevance and importance of the universal principle of mutual love, co-poeration, religious tolerance etc. are the only means to attain world peace and human welfare.

In the department, serious studies on the teachings of Vedanta are going on. Several National and International seminars ,workshops are being conducted for exploring, reserving and propagating this great Advaita tradition .

Dance (Bharatanatyam & Mohiniyattam)

Bachelor of Arts in Bharathanatyam is an undergraduate Acting, Dance & Drama course. Dance is a series of movements that match the speed and rhythm of a piece of music. Course focuses on developing your dance technique and knowledge of dance history, gaining embodied and theoretical experience of cultural forms, developing creative skills and increasing your knowledge of anatomy. In third year, you will work with a professional choreographer to create and perform a new work, and will work with a supervisor to create a piece of research (this might be practice-led). A variety of exciting option modules allows you to focus on areas of interest such as choreography, dance on screen, intensive technique, popular dance techniques, contemporary techniques, cultural dances, teaching and professional career development.

The department of Dance is established in 1995 and belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The department produces dancers and dance teachers in Bharatanatyam.

Class room lectures: These sessions covers the theoretical part of the syllabus. The objective of the sessions is to help the students gain a detailed knowledge dance, various theories of performance, modern stage and approaches etc.

Practical Sessions : As both the disciplines taught in the department are of performing nature, more thrust is always given on providing strict training during practical sessions in ‘kalaris’.

Sanskrit Sessions: The learning of dance is incomplete without acquiring a basic knowledge of the ancient Sanskrit Texts written on Indian Dance, Music and Drama like Natyasastra, Abhinayadarpanam, Sangeetaratnakaram etc. So, there are separate sessions to provide elementary knowledge on Sanskrit language to the dance students so that they can understand these valuable texts and their interpretations with more clarity.

Cultural History Sessions: Art is a product of culture. Hence, it is important to know the past cultural history which provided a platform for the origin and evolution of various art forms that we see today. We engage faculties from history and other related departments to conduct sessions on Art and Cultural history which have been beneficial to the dance students in a great way.

Although most dancers begin formal training at an early age, a degree in dance can provide the theoretical and technical mastery that is required for professional careers within the industry. Students enrolled in dance degree programs are exposed to many different forms of dance, as well as to dance history, kinesiology, choreography and production. From the ancient performance of music in temples and open places to the modern time recording and Bollywood music, the art has seen its evolution over a time span of thousands of years.
